CWMALLS World’s Fashion Trends Sharing And Review Series — Givenchy Launches New Antigona Soft Bags

For a decade, Givenchy’s signature Antigona bag has graced the arms of countless elegant women. The iconic Boston bag has a boxy shape and a rigid construction with sleek lines. Rigidity is even embodied in its name, which is inspired from the Greek myth of Antigone, whose name means unbending. To celebrate its 10th anniversary, Givenchy released a new version that may surprise fans of the architectural bag: the Antigona Soft. The Antigona Soft recalls the shape and style signatures of the original, including bold zippers and similar colorways, but it has a more fluid, relaxed shape.

The bags are made with smooth calfskin and have superb craftsmanship. Givenchy manufactures its bags in Italy with a commitment to the highest quality. The bag comes in three sizes. The large size is indeed very large and could also serve as a weekend bag, a nod to the Boston bag’s heritage. Both the large and medium sizes have dual zip closures with bombé zip pulls and side straps with turn-lock fastenings. Inside, there’s a pocket for storing cards. The small size is quite charming, and also has an interior zippered compartment and a card pocket. All bags have two top handles and a removable shoulder strap.

The collection is quite extensive for a first launch. It has classic pieces, as well as speciality prints and materials. A black leather model with hand-placed leather studs provides some dark glamour, while a version made from woven cord and leather could double as an ultra-chic beach bag. There are classic hues, including black, white, grey, nude and blue, and patterns, like a vintage-looking stripe and blue ombré. Colors exclusive to the Pre-Fall collection include pale pink, military green, and ice blue. The Antigona and Antigona Soft come in matching colors

The release comes on the heels of the appointment of Givenchy’s new creative director, Matthew Williams. Williams is known for his Los Angeles-based label 1017 Alyx 9SM, which won the LVMH Prize for Young Fashion Designers in 2016. He succeeds Clare Waight Keller, who departed the company earlier this year. Givenchy will release new colors for the Antigona and Antigona Soft bags in its men’s and women’s Fall collections. The women’s Fall collection will be his first for the house and will be presented in Paris in October.
